RUST BOOTI WORK MULMUL KURTI

This kurti is made in pure mulmul cotton — a fine, lightweight handwoven-style cotton known for its breathability and soft, slightly textured hand. Mulmul has a long history in Indian textile craft precisely because of how it behaves in warm weather and how gracefully it ages: it softens with every wash rather than losing shape.

What this means for the wearer:

• Highly breathable — one of the most comfortable cotton weights for warm climates and all-day wear
• Soft, matte finish that lets embroidery and dot detailing sit clearly on the surface
• Naturally structured drape — holds its shape better than sheer fabrics like georgette or chiffon
• Gets softer with wear and washing, which is characteristic of mulmul rather than a flaw
• Best cared for with gentle washing and low-heat ironing — confirm exact care instructions from the product record before publishing

The embroidery on this kurti draws on Chikankari, the traditional embroidery style associated with Lucknow, known for its fine, disciplined stitchwork worked directly onto the base fabric — here expressed primarily through booti, the small individual floral motifs that are one of Chikankari's most recognisable forms.

What's visible on this piece:

• Tonal booti motifs worked in a deep rust-on-rust thread, concentrated more densely at the yoke and shoulders and thinning into a lighter scatter through the body and sleeves — a classic Chikankari placement logic, where detail gathers at the neckline and eases outward
• A scattered gold-tone dot pattern layered across the entire kurti in an even grid, distinct from the booti work — this reads as a separate embellishment technique (commonly mukaish-style dot or foil work in Chikankari-adjacent pieces) rather than part of the embroidery thread itself
• A contrast maroon-and-gold trim at the cuffs, giving the sleeve a finished, jewellery-like detail against the plain rust ground
• A subtly embroidered trim at the keyhole neckline, continuing the tonal booti pattern into the opening

Booti work is prized in Chikankari precisely because of what it asks of the maker — each motif is placed individually rather than repeated as a continuous pattern, which is part of why the density here shifts naturally across the garment instead of reading as uniform.
