WHITE ON WHITE CHIKANKARI

This kurti is made in Georgette — a lightweight fabric with a fine crinkled texture and a naturally fluid drape. Georgette is especially suited to dense embroidery work like this: its crepe surface gives layered, close-set stitching room to hold definition without the fabric turning stiff or heavy, and its semi-sheer quality lets light pass through the embroidery rather than sitting flat against it.

The embroidery draws on Chikankari, the Lucknow embroidery tradition known for fine white-on-white work. On this piece it is built from small raised stitches that give the surface a knotted, grain-like texture, especially in the front panel.

What's visible on this piece:

• A long rectangular panel from neckline to hem, framed by a stitched border and filled with a diamond lattice and small floral motifs. This is the densest area of the garment.
• Diagonal bands running across the body on both sides of the panel, in a twisted, rope-like stitch that adds movement to the plain fabric
• A border along the keyhole neckline and shoulder seams, finished in small raised stitches
• Leaf motifs and banded cuffs on the sleeves
• Scattered leaf booti on the back, spaced apart and set against plain fabric, with an embroidered neckline edge
• An embroidered band at the hem that closes the front panel

The kurti has two embroidery registers: dense, structured work at the front, and open, spaced-out booti at the back. That contrast makes it easy to wear as a front-facing statement piece or turn around and be seen from behind.
